Are You Ready for 731Day?
Where were you last year on Monday, July 31? Many of you may have been enjoying your last summer vacation, stocking up on school supplies for the kids, or going through the motions of a typical Monday—but most of the community was out in Jackson celebrating our favorite local holiday: 731Day.
Established in 2016 by Our Jackson Home, 731Day is a celebration of Jackson and all those who are proud to be a part of West Tennessee. Every July 31 (7/31) we choose to join our community in enjoying the beauty of our city and the people who make it better every day.
Today marks two months from this year’s event, its third annual celebration, falling on a Tuesday for 2018. While that means plenty of time for preparations, Our Jackson Home is already busy getting out the word about their unique events as well as the dozens of local businesses hosting special deals and independent celebrations.
Each year, 731Day looks a little different; for example, in 2016, the day kicked off with a fun run, while last year offered a special Night of Storytelling event. The way Our Jackson Home hopes to make this year’s event unique is by hosting Jackson’s first-ever “Porchfest,” a progressive concert hosted by various neighbors throughout the LANA area. With ten musicians/bands performing between 4:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. throughout a walkable path, this event only requires its guests to bring their own lawn chairs (and some cash if wanting to grab dinner from local food trucks throughout the area; the event itself is free).
The one 731Day event Our Jackson Home has continued since its conception, though, is a family water balloon fight, featuring a total of 7,310 balloons. Having been hosted at Liberty Park and the AMP, this event is still being planned, but Our Jackson Home says that families can rest assured that it will be back and better than ever.
In addition to all these great events, Our Jackson Home will also be launching new merchandise, all locally designed and screen printed by hand at their home base of theCO. These items and a brand-new issue of the Our Jackson Home journal will be available for purchase over lunch at ComeUnity Café in downtown Jackson, where the #OJHshop Pop-Up will run 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
